PS 3 - 2 Things while Choosing a Console

Written by James Mowery on Friday, 27 August 2010 13:31.

The console wars wage on. There is no clear winner in site, and there may never be one. The Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have all found different niches. The Wii has locked up families and younger gamers. The hardcore gamers are split down the center between the 360 and the PS3. You can argue hardware back and forth, but choosing a console comes down to two things. Note how many pixels or polygons, but can it do more then just play games, and the games themselves.

PS3 has Blu-Ray; 360 not so much. Given a Blu-Ray player is a significant fraction of the cost of a PS3, I'm sold right there. Does the 360 have great games? Yes, but the PS3 has cornered the market on high quality RPGs.

Go on, I hear you in the back. Finish your snickering about RPGers not being real gamers. SquareSoft mades it's reputation as one of the greatest game developers on RPGs. RPGs have come a long way since the first Final Fantasy. When I sit down and intend to lose a day to a game, shooters don't do it for me. Platforms are fun now and again, but after a few hours I get frustrated. Pick up one of the new RPGs, FF13, Dragonage:Origins, Mass Effect 1 or 2. You will get drawn in, the games are just fun. The characters are engaging, likable. They banter back and forth. They help pull you in, engage you in the story of the game in a way that a great novel can. Except that with these games, you choose that plot twist.

A gamer should choose their console based on what they most enjoy. The Xbox and Wii just don't provide me the same value as the PS3. I'm an RPG guy, can't beat the PS3 for that.

Burnout™ Paradise Preview(PS3)

Written by igcompany on Friday, 09 July 2010 22:13.

Game Info

Enter Paradise City
Heaven on Earth, at least to road-raging, crash-causing Burnout fanatics, Paradise City is your domain and ultimate proving ground in Burnout Paradise. This expansive driver’s playground stretches across 250 miles and encompasses all sorts of road driving conditions, from fun-in-the-sun seaside cruising boulevards, to mountain roads and downtown gridlock. But regardless of what stretch of asphalt you find yourself on, the beauty of this place is that nothing is blocked off and your wits are at least as important as the horsepower under your hood when it comes to racing here.

Burnout Your Way
Unlike in previous Burnout games, Burnout Paradise not only puts the keys to your ride in your hands, but places you squarely in the driver’s seat when it comes to where you can go and what you can do.

Along with wide avenues and crowded highways, the open game design of Paradise City is also jammed full of hidden side streets, back roads and alley ways. These can be used as short cuts in races, that is, if you know where they are. As you explore, commit these potential short cuts to memory because they will definitely come in handy in a tight race. And since we are talking Burnout here, players should not expect uneventful, genteel contests of speed and precision driving. In Paradise City players are always free to slam, shunt and wreck opponents in their bids for supremacy and they will. Also, new to the Burnout series, races can now start anywhere, anytime. Just pull up to a stoplight and spin your wheels to start one in one of five different event classes:

* Classic Race
* Road Rage
* Burning Route
* Stunt Run (new)
* Marked Man (new)

Instant Online
Burnout Paradise also keeps the mobile carnage coming while simultaneously setting the new standard in online social gameplay. With the new ‘Easy Drive’ feature you can find friends online and with the click of a button invite them to a race. Once they’ve accepted the race will start immediately. That's right, no more annoying wait times at online lobbies and servers. And keeping in touch with friends is easier than ever.

Team up or Takedown
In the winner-take-all universe of Burnout teaming up usually isn’t the first option that comes to mind, but on these rough and tumble streets it's a good option to keep in mind. With more than 300 FreeBurn Challenges packed into the game, players always have the choice of going it alone against the field as a whole or joining forces with up to seven of your buddies in user-created race routes. Either way, if you are victorious in your takedown you'll get the chance to talk some trash as you exchange Mugshots with your victim via an optional camera hooked to your gaming system or your gamertag/PSN avatar if you prefer to keep your identity on the down-low.

Showtime: Crash Anywhere, Any Time
And finally since a new Burnout release wouldn't be complete without a little something special in the wreckage department, Burnout Paradise continues the carnage with an update of its familiar 'Crash Mode.' Renamed 'Showtime Mode,' players can now crash, bounce and scatter their ride in any location and replay the wreckage over and over in slow motion. One of the most addictive and down right fun features of the game, players activate the mode by simply pulling both triggers on their controller and if they are good enough can also immortalize their Showtime moments on the leaderboards for all to see.

Driving fans this is Next-Gen at its best and definitely the Burnout title you have been waiting for.

Brütal Legend Preview(PS3)

Written by igcompany on Friday, 09 July 2010 22:08.

Game Info

Jack Black stars as Eddie Riggs, a roadie who’s sucked into a mythical Age of Rock to fight evil, liberate an army of headbangers from a life of oppression, find love, and discover his life’s purpose. Heavy stuff until one realizes the universe of Brütal Legend has sprung up from the mind of legendary game director Tim Schafer.

Enter the world of Heavy Metal where mountains are made of amplifiers, killer spiders spin guitar strings, druids want to kill you, and Rock Legends roam the landscape.

Armed with a massive battle-axe, guitar, and his hot-rod, Eddie will rip the faces off of demons. As Eddie, expect to crush skulls, ravage the road in the Deuce, and unleash the power of Heavy Metal to reign down fire from the sky — all to save humanity and become a brutal legend!

  • Action combat! Brütal Legend’s core gameplay is classic action slasher, but with a twist: ranged combat comes from your demon-slaying, electricity-creating guitar. Add that 1-2 punch to a guitar solo mechanic that can summon objects, buff your teammates, or cripple your opponents, and you have a deep, gratifying core gameplay combat loop that is fun for the hardcore and accessible for the casual.
  • Streaming open world! Brütal Legend gives you the freedom to walk, drive, or fly anywhere in a fullystreaming open world whose art style is inspired by some of the most iconic and hilariously rad metal album covers ever created. Every vista in the beautiful universe of Brütal Legend looks like it was pulled from a Frank Frazetta painting.
  • Heavy metal will never die! Brütal Legend is full of cameos from Gods of Metal like Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, and many, many others. It has a MASSIVE metal soundtrack from every era of metal music: 1970’s classic metal to 1980’s hair metal to the scarier cousins of 1990’s metal. And of course, Jack Black pays the ultimate homage to metal as Eddie the Roadie, continuing the theme from the work of his band, Tenacious D and his previous films like School of Rock and High Fidelity.
  • Kill ‘em All! 4v4 “skirmish” multiplayer marries action combat with a strategic unit-control mechanic. As the leader of one of the factions in the game, the player will direct his armies in a Battle of the Bands where the trophy is survival. Brütal Legend’s multiplayer is online-enabled, so you can conquer your friends online via Xbox Live or Playstation Network*.
